Srinagar, August 21- The state government will give first prize of Rs. one lakh each to 10+2 and college students who win the state level debate on Gandhian philosophy and its relevance in the 21st century. The prizes will be given away on Gandhi Jayanti falling on October 2.
The 2nd prize for each category would be of Rs. 50, 000 while two 3rd prizes of Rs. 25,000 each would also be given away at a grand function likely to be telecast live on national channel. The topic of the debate would be ‘Gandhian Philosophy of Truth and Non-Violence: Its Relevence in 21st Century’.
Decision to this effect was taken at a high level meeting chaired by Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad here.
Minister for Education, Peerzada Muhammad Sayeed, Minister of State for Education, S. Manjit Singh, Minister of State for Higher and Technical Education, Ajaz Ahmad Khan, Chief Secretary, C. Phunsog, Principal Secretary to Chief Minister, Anil Goswami, Commissioner/Secretary, Higher and Technical Education, Pramod Jain, Secretary, School Education, K. M. Wani, Additional Secretary to CM, Ajaz Ahmad Kakroo, Director Colleges, N. D. Wani and Director, School Education, Kashmir, Muhammad Rafi were present.
The Chief Minister said competition among school students would be held at zonal, district, provincial and state level and in case of colleges students at district, provincial and state level. The language for the competition would be Urdu and Hindi. The successful participants would move forward to the next level of competition until the final state level debate to be held among the finalists on October 2. He said 54 colleges and about 1000 schools are expected to take part in the massive exercise aimed at encouraging students and promoting the Gandhian principles among the young generation.
Azad said the large prize money was offered to motivate and encourage students to participate in the competition, the first on the subject with huge financial incentive for students to be held anywhere in the country. He said the government was spending hundreds of crores of rupees on education while little or no attention was paid on developing interest of young students in issues most crucial to the society today. He said Gandhiji as Father of the Nation looked at Jammu & Kashmir with much hope and prospect. He said in the 1947 flare up when the whole sub-continent was engulfed by violence, Kashmir was the only place to remain untouched by communal frenzy, making Gandhiji to say his famous words that he saw a ray of hope only in the valley.
The Chief Minister said that the philosophy of non-violence advocated and practiced by Gandhiji was as relevant today as it was then and recalled how he successfully fought the British with the weapon of non-violence. He said the youth should follow his teachings and promote tolerance and amity among various sections of society. He asked senior officers of college and school education departments to publicise through electronic and print media holding of the debate. He also told them to send communication to all headmasters and principals of high and higher secondary schools and colleges immediately to inform students across the three regions of the state about the competition and the prize money. This, he said, would ensure their maximum participation.
The Chief Minister called for formulation of a calendar for different levels of the competition. He said besides the first, second and two third prizes, consolation prizes would also be given to school students who top at zonal, district and provincial level and to college students standing first at district and provincial level competitions. He said a panel of judges comprising persons of eminence would be drafted for each level of competition.
Azad also announced that on September 5, observed as Teachers’ Day across the country, provincial level functions would be held at Bakhshi Stadium, Srinagar and Mini Stadium at Jammu to mark the occasion this year.
