| 2008 POLLS: PDP ON TRACK, CONG-NC SEARCHING FOR ROAD AHEAD | | PDP IN FAVOUR OF FIELDING SITTING MLAS | | Srinagar,August 23 :-PDP has gone ahead of the Congress and the National Conference in motivating its leaders, including MLAs and those who were defeated in 2002 poll,to gear up for the pre-poll campaign in the state. The next election,if not preponed,is scheduled to be held in October 2008. Senior PDP leaders said today that in all probability all the sitting MLAs would be fielded for the next poll and those who had lost by a narrow margin were also to be given party tickets. They said that in 2002,when the PDP had had overcome its teething problems, the party had contested in 59 out of 87 constituencies and had bagged 16 seats.During the next election the party may contest from more than 60 constituencies in case there was no pre-poll alliance with the Congress. In case of some alliance or electoral understanding the PDP may field its candidates from 50 constituencies, majority of them from the Kashmir valley.Under some electoral adjustment it will leave atleast 30 seats for the Congress to contest from the Jammu region. It plans to field its candidates from Kishtwar,Vijaypur,Bishna,Suchetgarh and one seat in Pooch-Rajouri belt. Senior PDP leaders said that “we are trying our best to give a serious fight to the National Conference and we may succeed in case the party leadership recitifed its policies towards the party cadre.” They said that “several senior leaders felt suffocated because nonentities were being patronized by the PDP leadership at the cost of those who had been among the founders of the organization.” They said that “we have been able to fulfill most of the promises we had made during the 2002 poll.” In reply to a question the PDP leaders said “fulfilling other commitment was a continuous process and we are trying to prepare other issues which we could use in our poll manifesto.”They suggested to Mufti Mohd.Sayeed and his daughter to develop the power to differentiate between genuine leaders and workers and those who are new comers to the organization and continue to be nonentities.
