| ERA will release Rs. 4.54 crore | | Money to be spent on Sitlee intake system; tube wells, hand pumps to augment supply | | Srinagar, August 24 Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad today convened a high level meeting to discuss scarcity of drinking water in Jammu city and take immediate measures to cope with the situation. The meeting was attended by Minister for Health, Mangat Ram Sharma, Minister for PHE, Irrigation & Flood Control, Muhammad Dilawar Mir and MLAs Yogesh Sawhney, Raman Bhalla. Legislator Abdul Majid Wani was also present. The Chief Minister, in order to overcome the water crisis in the winter capital, asked Economic Reconstruction Agency (ERA) to immediately release Rs. 4.54 crore to PHE, Jammu for quick completion of the Intake No. 1 scheme at Sitlee Filtration Plant. He also ordered immediate construction of an additional intake system with filtration plant to replace the system washed away by floods last year. He approved a Rs. 21.89 crore proposal for the scheme and asked the PHE department to approach the Planning Department for funds. In the meanwhile, however, some money would be raised as loan from Jammu Development Authority (JDA) so that the scheme is taken up in the right earnest. The Vice Chairman, JDA informed that the Authority had surplus money which after making available to PHE could subsequently be reimbursed by the latter. For augmenting drinking water supply in the city, Azad instructed ERA to immediately dig ten new tube wells. Additional hand pumps would also be dug to meet the requirement. The Power Development Department was asked to arrange 2600 kv additional power supply and a captive diesel generator set to run the scheme flawlessly. Pertinent to recall that the Chief Minister had taken an emergency meeting on the situation arising out of water crisis in Jammu City on Sunday last and issued instructions to press into service more water tankers and complete the ongoing intake system. The meeting was attended by the concerned minister and public representatives and officers. The Chief Minister had expressed unhappiness over drinking water scarcity in the city and instructed concerned officers to take immediate measures for alleviating the people’s inconvenience.
