| Over Rs.109 crore released under accelerated rural water supply programme | | | JAMMU, August 24, 2007 Central Government has released an amount of Rs.109.24 crore to Jammu and Kashmir State as first installment of funds under Accelerated Rural Water Supply Programme for the current financial year against the provisional allocation of Rs.327.72 crores . As per the guidelines for implementation of Rural Water Supply Programme, 15% of the funds under Accelerated Rural Water Supply Programme (ARWSP) is meant for Operation and Maintenance and 5% for taking sustainability measures under Sub-Mission. The Department of Drinking Water Supply, Rajiv Gandhi National Drinking Water Mission, under Ministry of Rural Development, Government of India, has asked the J&K Government to delegate powers for management of Rural Water Supply Schemes through the Panchayati Raj Institutions as per the Constitution of India. The State Government has also been informed that no expenditure should be incurred on tackling water quality problems from the present release. The amount has been released by the Centre for execution/completion of schemes to provide safe drinking water facilities to rural habitations and schools under the Centrally Sponsored ARWSP. The priority will have to be accorded to the coverage of Schools and Water Quality affected habitations of the State. Accelerated Rural Water Supply Programme was launched during 1972-73. It is currently being implemented through the Rajiv Gandhi National Drinking Water Mission. The scheme aims at coverage of all rural habitations with population of 100 and above, specially the un-reached ones, ensure sustainability of the system and sources, tackle the problem of water quality and institutionalize water quality monitoring and surveillance through a Catchments Area Approach (CAP).
