| AWWA day celebrated | | | Jammu, 24 August 2007 On the occasion of 42nd raising day of the Army Wives Welfare Association (AWWA), Sunita Malik, President AWWA Crossed Swords Division, honoured the Veer Naaris. A function was organized by the Army at the Sangha auditorium which was also conducted by Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC) who are working in association with AWWA to generate employment for war widows and Ex-servicemen. A series of events were conducted by AWWA at Akhnoor through out the month of August which included a Hindi Debate Competition. A Breast Cancer Awareness drive was launched to increase the awareness amongst the ladies on early detection of Breast Cancer. Thereafter a week long ‘Breast Cancer Checkup Camp’ was organized in the residential complexes of the Akhnoor Military Station wherein 358 families were tested for Breast Cancer. A special camp was also organized for the medical checkup of over 600 little children studying in the nursery schools run by the Army. A ‘Van Mahotsav’ was conducted wherein the school children, soldiers and their families enthusiastically participated in plantation of hundreds of trees. Clean house and surroundings is the basic of good health and harmony. Hence a competition to select the best house was also organized to encourage the families to keep their houses neat and the surroundings clean. Special efforts were made to improve the electric, water supply and special repair where carried out the houses.
