Tanker service to overcome water scarcity in Jammu city
8/24/2007 10:57:06 PM

Srinagar, August 24-Minister for PHE, Irrigation and Flood Control Mohammad Dilawar Mir today informed the House that water supply in parts of Jammu city was badly affected due to washing away of one intake structure at Sitlee Filtration Plant and its water supply got reduced due to high turbidity because of heavy rains in the catchment of the River Tawi. He said that the problem was aggravated due to frequent power disruptions and got reduced to only 50 to 60 lac gallons per day as against 80 to 90 lac gallons per day. But now the position has improved considerably as high turbidity has got reduced and the water availability has increased.
The Minister was replying to a Calling Attention Notice by Yogesh Sawhney regarding shortage of drinking water in Jammu city.
He said that to mitigate the problem, water tankers were pressed into service as a temporary measure after collapse of intake at Sitlee due to flash floods. Besides, 10 mini Bore Wells with a capacity of 25 lac gallons were drilled in the Company Bagh and Shakti Nagar areas and one Percolation Well was commissioned at Sitlee. As a permanent measure, one Intake is under construction which is targeted for completion during the current year, he added.
He said that in an emergency meeting convened by the Chief Minister, Ghulam Nabi Azad on August 19 at Jammu, it was decided that more tankers would be pressed into service and ongoing work on new intake be completed very soon besides one more intake in place of the damaged Sitlee Intake and ten new tube wells be constructed within a period of six months.
Replying to another Calling Attention Notice by Dr. Manohar Lal regarding failure of machinery in some water supply schemes of Billawar constituency, the PHE Minister said that Pallan-Dharhlta Water Supply Scheme is closed and requires to be upgraded/improved while as Water Supply Scheme Changi Makwal is approved for execution under ARWSP and Water Supply Scheme Rajwalta is being funded under ARWSP Phase-IV.
He further stated that Water Supply Scheme Kano is closed and requires augmentation for which a proposal is under process while as Water Supply Scheme Amla Dhalhoti is ongoing on under ARWSP Phase-II. He said Water Supply Scheme Dabi is partially functional and requires augmentation for which a proposal is under process.
The Minister informed that 54 hand pumps have been installed in Billawar constituency during last two years, out of which six hand pumps were failure during operation of drilling.
