‘Mental fatigue, depression root cause’

It may look incredible but it is hard fact that the suicide cases among the anti-insurgency forces have shown an upward trend in the recent past and hardly a day is left when reports about suicide by the jawans are not pouring in from different places in the trouble torn Jammu and Kashmir State.
Despite this growing trend the authorities have not done little to contain it nor has it been able to know the causes behind these.
It is pertinent to mention here that suicide cases are increasing in the army units especially those who are working in the border areas like Poonch, Rajouri, Kupwara and many such other places. The forces deployed to counter the militancy by mere frustration or stress have been committing suicide by their service weapons and some time under frustration have been killing their colleagues and in some cases their senior officers. Only this year many such incidents have been reported from the state.
Sources said the senior army officers and other agencies which are posted in the state face many problems due to increase in incidents and the mounting pressure. The main causes of suicide or attack on seniors, according to psychologist in security forces, is depression, strong stress, family problems, leave problems and long postings etc. Sources said in some cases the senior officers not grant leave to the jawans as a result of which they kill their officers and senior officers. To lessen the stress Yoga camps have also been arranged for the forces. Sources said on the directions from defence ministry the officers have started holding open ‘darbars’ with the jawans to listen their problems and take on the stop remedial steps. This step has been taken to minimize such incidents.
According to a report for the first time in 18 years of militancy an army Jawan of 152 TA (Sikh) regiment committed suicide with his service rifle at Battle School Bhalra, about 20 km away from Bhaderwah town on August 13 last causing panic in the entire battalion. The victim identified as Sulaiman Khan s/o Sher Khan r/o Malar Kotla, Punjab was reportedly under stress and took this extreme step, the sources said adding that the sudden gun shots created panic and all the under training soldiers ran helter shelter and took it a militant attack. But soon all of them came to know that one of their colleague had committed suicide in his room and the authorities concerned of the school along with his roommates immediately rushed him to the near by Sub-Distt-Hospital Bhaderwah where doctors declared him brought dead. After that the doctors conducted his post-mortem in the presence of senior police and civil officials it was revealed that the Jawan had received bullet injuries and it was declared by the doctors at that time that he had committed suicide.
When this reporter talked to his roommates who are also receiving the pre-induction training in the same school, disclosed that they arrived at Bhallara only one week back and from that date he was in depression and was not talking to any one and always expressed his desire to move back. But on August 13 at about 8.30 am he shot himself taking a very extreme step, ending all his difficulties. At present the Jawans are given highly motivated counter insurgency training to combat terrorist techniques .Therefore some time it becomes too difficult to face physical as well as mental stress under the militancy affected circumstances for people who come with the motive of luxurious style of life and also briefed that the reasons of introvert nature of the people because such type of people do not want to share their problems due to certain personal reasons which leads them to take hard steps to harm themself and also to end their life .Where as all the under training jawans are given first introductive guidelines to share their personal problems with the Gurus that means teachers .
The officials of the Battle school further added that at very first all the comforts are made available to meet the needs of the soldiers both medically and psychologically for better results, but it is possible to tackle the problems only when the Jawans express their problems.
Dr.Rajesh Gupta of SDH Bhaderwah who conducted the post-mortem said three bullet injuries were found on the abdomen and under the neck and it was observed that he had committed suicide. The post-mortem report was submitted to Station House Officer Bhaderwah by SDH Bhaderwah for further investigation by police authorities to negate any foul play. Dr.Rajesh also said that the deceased jawan was probably in depression for the last so many days and was not felling well, and was probably the major reason for resorting to such a step.
Senior district police officials on condition of anonymity said that further investigation in this case is going on under section 174 RPC as it was earlier observed that the Jawan had committed suicide. They are also critical of the fact that there are some vested interests playing in the form of distorting the facts and propagating the complete incident through different media agencies as a murder than a suicide. However they asserted that investigations are on and are leading towards only one fact that the incident is of suicide and nothing else, as stated by army authorities.
