| JU likely to take over IMFA | | | Surinder Raina JAMMU: To bring an end to the controversies which have grappled Institute of Music and Fine Arts (IMFA), Jammu University has been asked to begin process of taking over the arts institute. In this regard, a meeting of Divisional Commissioner Jammu and Jammu University (JU) vice chancellor was taken place recently, wherein the initial talks and modalities of taking over were discussed. Sources informed that the Chief Minister, Ghulam Nabi Azad who is also president of Jammu and Kashmir Academy of Arts, Culture and Languages had directed the VC to meet the Div Com and begin the process of taking over the IMFA by the Jammu University. However, sources informed that the university is not ready to take the employees and instructors of IMFA in the university and this is creating a hurdle in take over. According to sources in the JU, the instructors and other staff members do not adhere to the norms set by the UGC as according to the norms set by the commission, only NET and SLET selected teachers can take the classes in a university. The present staff at IMFA are not selected by either of the two bodies though they are otherwise qualified in their respective subjects, experienced and well trained and taking classes at IMFA for last many years. The university has to either adopt some flexibility in its rule and adjust them into university as instructors or the instructors at IMFA would have to undergo NET or SLET tests. This is not the first time that university will take over any outside institute. Earlier, university had taken over the SPMR College of Commerce from Rajput Charitable Trust and adjusted its staff in university. With the Chief Minister and Vice Chancellor appearing in public as promoters of art and culture, the take over of the IMFA by the university is a good sign for the future of the arts school which is facing downfall.
