| WARRIORS REMEMBERED | | | Jammu, 26 August 2007 The 130 Helicopter Unit (HU) Christened as ‘THE CONDORS’ was formed at Jammu on 06 April 1988. The Condors is a frontline helicopter unit presently equipped with MI-17 IV helicopters mainly involved in J&K sector for various roles such as Air Maintenance, Logistic support communications etc. The Condors takes its name from one of the largest living birds found in the mountains of California. The flight of the condors is a sight to behold as it gracefully yet powerfully soars high on its outstretched pinions. The aircrews of 130 HU share this quality of soaring high and gracefully like the condors, touching the sky with glory. Every year the Condors unit observes 26 August as its Martyrs day since last 10 years, when in August 1996 four brave condors laid down their lives in the service of the nation while carrying out crucial air maintenance sorties in Operation Meghdoot sector in the icy heights of southern Siachen Glacier. The Station Commander of Air Force Station Jammu Group Captain JS Kler VM along with the present Commanding Officer of ‘The Condors’ Wing Commander Varun Sharma laid wreaths to the Station War Memorial of Air Force Station Jammu on 26 Aug this year after a guard of honour and remembered the supreme sacrifice of Flight Lieutenant Sandeep Jain and Pilot Officer Vaibhav Bhagwat who were awarded Shaurya Chakra Posthumously while Sergent M Rudresh Flight Engineer and Sergent KC Jha Flight Gunner were awarded Mention-in-Dispatches.
