| Workshop on “Industrial Potential of J&K: Obstacles and Remedies” held | | | SRINAGAR, AUGUST 26 – Minister for Power Nawang Rigzin Jora has called for systematic harnessing of natural and human resources of Jammu and Kashmir State to tread the path of progress and development. He said all the three regions of state are rich in diverse and potential resources which need to be tapped for development. The Minister was speaking at a workshop on “Industrial Potential of J&K Obstacles and Remedies”. The workshop was organized by Electrical Engineers Department of National Institute of Technology (NIT). The aim of the workshop was to provide a common platform to the industrialists, economists, academicians, policy makers and the executives to share their vision and expertise. The Minister hoped that today’s industry-institute interaction would help in proper identification of industrial potential, its present status, future prospects, availability and exploration of resources, obstacles in industrial fields in general and energy sector in particular. The Minister said that government is taking keen interest in the identification of certain areas in electronics, information technology, food processing, agro-based industries, cutting and polishing of stones, gems and jewellery etc for their planned development, adding for the purpose central government has been approached for grant of funds. He hoped that the workshop would help in exploring the possibility of establishing a core group of persons to submit a proposal to the government for consideration. The group shall also attract and motivate the investors of the state and country for establishing industrial units in the state besides creating awareness among engineers and entrepreneurs for making ventures. Director NIT Prof. R. K. Wanchloo, in his presidential address said that the revival of sick industrial units is a challenging issue for the industrialists, government executives and financial agencies. He informed that about 36,520 units were surveyed, of which 16,219 units have been found untraceable, adding these untraceable units were registered only to take the advantages of the incentives given to small-scale industries in the state. As many as 15,145 units were functional, 4,840 units closed and 306 units sick, he pointed out.
