500 detained as "precautionary measure" in Jammu

Over 500 people, mostly anti-social elements, have been rounded up as "precautionary measure" in Jammu region as part of the security measures for Independence Day, a top police official said.
"As a precautionery measure and to ensure incident free Independence Day, over 500 persons, most of the suspects and anti-social elements, were detained in Jammu," Deputy Inspector General, Jammu-Kathua range, Niyaz Mehmood told pti.
However, several of them were released after questioning by the police, he said and termed this is as a routine drill to round up suspects and anti-social elements.
"Unlike in the past the threat perception this time is highest as intelligence reports reveal several vital installations, including Jammu railway station, Ragunath temple, airport, Doordarshan Kendra, radio station and police and army establishement as possible targets of miltiants," the DIG said.
"We have taken all measures to ensure incident-free I-Day celebrations amid installation of multi-tier security," he added.
Services of ten additional companies of police and para-military forces have been requistioned to keep the trouble-makers away and ensure incident-free Independence Day here, Senior Superintendent of Police, Jammu district, Mukesh Singh said.
The city has been divided into two zones, seven sectors and 30 sub-sectors. Police officers of the rank of SPs will be incharge of zones. Nine deputy SPs, 30 NGOs besides the terrorial staff is looking after the security arrangements, he said.
The SSP said to check entry of any militant in disguise of police, all uniformed men have been issued identity card slips. No hand bags and eatables will be allowed inside the venue, entry and exist points of which have been plugged. Night patrolling has been intensified.
About extra precautions taken, the SSP disclosed that in view of some intelligence inputs regarding possible strike of militants, special nakas have been set up besides intensifying checking in hotels and lodges, airport, railway station and bus stands besides other important public places.
"Forces have been deployed along Jammu-Srinagar highway and areas close to international border in Samba-Kathua sector, round the clock monitoring is being done," SSP, Kathua, J P Singh said.
"Quick reaction teams have been deployed in these areas in case on any eventuality," he said.
Troops have been deployed along railway track and Jammu railway station, besides installation of close-circuit cameras at the station besides deployment of six snifer dog squads, they said, adding "Railway station has also been made out of bonds for the public transport and private vehciles. No vehicle would allowed to parked in railway station area".
Round the clock guard is being ensured at tunnels and bridges along Jammu-Udhampur rail line, they said.
DGP Gopal Sharma, Inspector General Police, Jammu zone, S P Vaid along with district police chief reviewed security measures for I-Day in Doda, Jammu and rajouri ranges.
Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad also reviewed security in the city by undertaking a walk last night.
