| Valley feels the heat of turbine shifting | | |

The power starved valley is for another shock from the authorities who have decided to shift one of the two units of the Pompore Gas turbine generation to the Ladakh region.
The valley has been experiencing severe power shortages from many decades now and the shifting of the gas turbine unit would only make matters worse.
According to reliable sources in the Power department high officials are contemplating to shift unit 11 of the Pompore gas turbine which has a capacity of generating 100 MW’s. The unit 11 is presently feeding 132 KV Bus of the Pompore grid station. Earlier Power Development Corporation (PDC) had decided the Unit 11 will run as synchronous condensers on 132 KV Bus and would connect 220 KV and 400 KV transmission lines. By using the unit 11 as synchronous condensers it would have reduced the reactive power bill which presently amounts to million of rupees per annum. The proposal due to unknown reasons has put on rust in a cold storage. However, Power development department (PDD) has decided to install a separate 100 MVA shunt capacitors in various grid stations to reduce the drawal of reactive power . According to experts the installation of new machinery is an inapt planning as the department has already sufficient infrastructure and gas turbine unit 11 is fit to work as shunt capacitor. “ This is ridiculous planning. The big fish in the department want their blue eyed boys to extract huge amount on money from state exchequer,” said official of the department preferring anonymity.
Experts say if the shifting of Gas turbine unit to Leh is necessary, it would be advisable to shift Unit 1 as unit 11 is directly connected to 132 KV transmission system of the valley and the unit run as synchronous condenser to both Jammu and Kashmir and hence save crores of rupees per annum. Minister power Nuwan Rigzin denied the shifting of unit 11 of Pompore Gas turbine and said , “ We are not shifting anything to Leh but we need 24 crores for the replacement of alternative shunt capacitors.”
