| Death in hospital: Relatives on rampage | | | Srinagar, Aug 31 A mob today attacked a hospital in the Kashmir valley, injuring a nurse and damaging properties while protesting against the death of a pregnant woman. The demonstrators, who also blocked traffic on the Sriangar- Hazratbal road for about an hour and pelted stones at passing vehicles, alleged that the hospital administration had not provided any ambulance to take Shagufta, resident of nearby Jogi Lanker, to Lalded (women's) hospital. Official sources said more than two dozen demonstrators, mostly relatives of the woman, later ransacked the hospital, removed windows from the old block and damaged window panes in the new block. Later, they damaged about a dozen cars of doctors and two ambulances of the hospital. A nurse was also injured after being beaten up by the demonstrators, the sources added. A large number of police personnel were deployed in and outside the hospital. Traffic on the road was also restored to allow people to visit holy Hazratbal shrine because of Friday. Reports from Srinagar also revealed that immediately after hearing the news of the death of Shugufta, the relatives of the deceased went on the rampage and started damaging the infrastructure of the hospital. The doctor who attended the patient was accused of mishandling the surgery and immediately fled from the scene. The accused doctor has been allegedly found in unscroplous activities in the past also. The attendents and the relatives have asked the hospital authorities about the 'dubious' competence of the doctor. It is pertinent to mention that Rainawari hospital has been in news several times before and it is alleged that there is a nexus between drug suppliers and doctors and the senior doctors in the hospital direct their subordinates to prescribe the medicines from particular companies.
