Preoccupation in party affairs kept Mufti away from Assembly
9/1/2007 11:52:06 PM

Srinagar, September 1 :-Patron of PDP, Mufti Mohd. Sayeed, has been spending more time in strengthening the organization in order to exceed the number of seats it won in 2002 Assembly poll. In 2002 election it had won 16 seats and later bagged one more seat during the by-election caused by the demise of National Conference leader, Ghulam Mohiuddin Shah.
Sources close to the Mufti said that the former Chief Minister wanted the party workers and leaders to strain their nerves for building a wave in favour of the PDP ahead of the pre-poll campaign. The sources said that Mufti Sayeed’s focus was to mobilize voters support so that the National Conference was not able to even win 28 seats which it had bagged in 2002 poll.Right from morning till late evening the PDP patron is seen engaged in purposeful discussion with his trusted men in the organization for short-listing PDP candidates in various constituencies.
According to these sources, preoccupation with the organizational activities kept the Mufti away from the Assembly session that ended in Srinagar on Friday.Political leaders, mediamen and those sitting in public galleries were intrigued when the Mufti did not attend the 10-day session even once. Ever since Mufti Sayeed was elected to the Assembly in 2003 the Mufti has not evinced any keen interest in participating in the debates and discussion on the floor of the House.
Whenever keen watchers tried to know the reason for the Mufti’s absence from the Assembly they were told that since he was busy in addressing public meetings and in giving final shape to the party strategy during the election due in next year he preferred to miss the session. However, informed sources said that the Mufti, during the 10-day session of the Assembly, had not been highly busy in addressing party rallies. Not more than two to three public rallies were held where he was the Chief guest.
These sources said that the main reason for the Mufti to stay away from the Assembling sittings was that he did not feel comfortable while occupying Number two seat on the floor of the House. Also, the reason for his brief presence during the budget session early this year, was that he did not feel comfortable with Chief Minister,Ghulam Nabi Azad.
Though the a truce has been effected between the PDP and the Congress leadership Mufti Sayeed was yet to reconcile with the situation in which he lost power to Mr Azad.Hence he thought it better to devote full time to the organizational activities in a bid to help the PDP to stage a comeback with a bang in the next Assembly poll.
