Football tournament between West Bengal, J&K teams in offing: CM

Srinagar, September 02 – Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad today said that football tournament between the teams of West Bengal and Jammu & Kashmir would be organised sometime next month to boost the game in the State.
Talking with media persons at the conclusion of 10th All J&K Police Martyrs’ Memorial Football Tournament here, the Chief Minister said that football as a game was popular in the two states and he would talk with the West Bengal officials to see that football matches were held between the teams of the two states sometime in October.
“I will talk with West Bengal authorities today”, Azad said when asked if he would organise a major football competition in Srinagar in next two months. He said the game was very popular in Kashmir and West Bengal and he was looking forward to holding a football tournament in which teams from J&K and West Bengal would participate.
The Chief Minister said he was happy to see a large number of football enthusiasts in Bakshi Stadium today to watch the final match played between J&K Bank and J&K Police teams. He said the interest of youth in games was an encouraging sign and an indication of the situation returning to normal.
Azad said his government would do everything to promote sports in the State and J&K Sports Council was taking measures in this direction.
The final of the 10th All J&K Police Martyrs’ Memorial Football Tournament was won by J&K Bank after penalty shootout when the game was levelled at 1-1. In the penalty shootout, J&K Bank scored 3 goals while J&K Police managed to score only 2. J&K Bank lifted the cup by 4-3 goals.
In the first half both the teams scored one goal each while the second half of the match remained goal-less. Both the teams played equally good game, however, in the allotted time the match ended in a tie with 1-1.
The Chief Minister who was the chief guest at the final presented the cup to the J&K Bank, the winners of the championship. He also gave away prizes to the runner up and other participating teams.
Azad also presented mementos to the next of kin of the police martyrs.
The performance of police daredevils on motorcycles was star attraction during the interval of the match, which received applause from nearly packed stadium.
Speaking on the occasion, Director General of Police Kuldeep Khoda said that 34 football teams from within and outside the State participated in the tournament. He said the tournament was initiated in the memory of Inspector Mushtaq Ahmad Baba in 1998 which was renamed as All Jammu and Kashmir Police Martyrs’ Memorial Football Tournament in 2004 to pay homage to the police martyrs. He said Jammu and Kashmir Police has emerged as a strong contender in various sports events at the national level.
Legislators and senior civil and police officers were present.
