| Limited tax waiver on fruits | | | Early Times Reporter
Jammu | Sept 5: Jammu and Kashmir government today announced the
exemption of entry tax on all outgoing fruit-laden trucks from the valley and other parts of the state from October to December, the peak harvesting period.
The move is aimed at promoting horticulture in the state.
A decision to this effect was taken at a meeting held here for devising ways to facilitate transportation of fruit from the state to other terminal markets of the country, state Transport Minister Hakeem Mohammad Yaseen said. He said the decision would provide benefit of about Rs 1.75 crore to the transporters and fruit growers of the state, he added.
Yaseen said the truck, which would be carry nine metric tons of fruit, would be weighed at the newly set up weigh bridge at lower Manda near Jawahar tunnel on Srinagar-Jammu National Highway.
The step would check Palti System (transshipment) of fruit at Lakhanpur which otherwise causes inconvenience to transporters and fruit growers and also damages fruits. Trucks from the valley would be allowed to cross Jawahar tunnel, up to 12 pm while the Lakhanpur toll post would remain open round the clock for fruit loaded trucks from various parts of the state, the minister said. Yaseen asked the concerned authorities to take concrete measures to check the transshipment at Lakhanpur which not only causes losses to the state exchequer, adding that flying squads would be deployed to check the activities of the unregistered and fake transport agencies, he said. The meeting was attended by state Horticulture Minister Mohammad Dilawar Mir and representatives of various fruit growers' associations and transport agencies.
