Thieves walk away with Rs 14 lakh cables, 6500 phone lines snapped

Jammu| Sep 4: It was least a tragedy and more a comedy as bunch of
thieves simply walked away with telephone cables worth lakhs of rupees
in full view of the cops of Jammu and Kashmir Police and the Central
Reserve Police Force.
More than 6000 people have got their telephone connections snapped due
to this "theft" but none is ready to believe that it was actually a
theft. This happened just under the walls of highly fortified and
thickly guarded building of the Reserve Bank of India at Rail Head
Complex adjoining Bahu Plaza.According to the case story, an interesting bunch of thieves came riding on a tractor and leisurely parked their trolley near the Reserve Bank of India building. They got their instruments out and cut through the underlying Optical Fiber Cable. Not only this they swindled a huge bundle of cable in the trolley, had few cigarettes, gup-shup and walked away.
According to the shy eye witnesses, who realized only the next day that it was a theft, a patrol party of the Jammu and Kashmir Police had passed by when the wires were neing cut through the bundle was being loaded in the trolley. In their typical style, cops asked them as what was going on; the thieves said that they were BSNL party busy with the repair works. 'Ok, go ahead", said the cops of JKP when cables worth Rs 14 lakh were being stolen. carrying out repair and relaying of cable in the area and went on with their job.
General Manager BSNL Mr RK Koul said today that the thieves had cut the cable rolls worth Rs 14 lakhs before escaping the scene of the incident. He said 1600 metre cable had been looted thereby affecting 6500 telephone lines in Trikuta Nagar and Transport Nagar.
He said that a complaint has been lodged in the Trikuta Nagar police station. In reply to a question he said that the BSNL has already undertaken the repair work and it may take at least three days to restore the telephone services in the area. SHO Trikuta Nagar PK mengi said that a complaint has been booked adding that they are carrying out investigations to identify the gang of thieves. He said we are questioning few suspects and shortly the case of cable theft will be solved.
