| Mehbooba threatens poll battle | | Congress says, she is just joking | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | Sept 4: Despite Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad's firefighting efforts to save crisis in the coalition, the Peoples Democratic Party today threw yet another spanner by "informally" announcing elections. In an indications that going was getting tough with both the partners, Mehbooba explicitly said that elections should be round the corners. The Congress circles, however, skirted the PDP president's statement by describing it as a pressure tactics. "We have heard several such jokes in past one and a half year…let them come to the elections". After a meeting of the PDP leaders held at Mufti Mohammad Sayeed's Gupkaar Road residence in Srinagar, Mehbooba told reporters that the Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad has violated the coalition principles. She said that her party was ready to go for elections. Earlier Mehbooba asked the party functionaries to vigorously disseminate the party's pro-people policies and programmes at the grassroots level in the run up to the upcoming assembly elections. "As PDP has set new standards of ethical politics, the responsibilities of its cadres have also grown manifold," she said. Addressing a meeting of the PDP office-bearers here today, Ms Mufti said given its unwavering stance on the issues concerning the urges and aspirations of the masses, people's expectations with the party have grown manifold. "These growing expectations have put more responsibility on our shoulders and we will have to justify our representation by working tirelessly for the betterment of the people," she said and added that the party functionaries must highlight the political, economic, social and developmental concerns of the masses at the appropriate forums to seek redressel. Ms Mufti said PDP has made utmost efforts to implement its programmes and policies, both on the political and economic fronts, in letter and spirit. She said on the political front PDP created an environment for reconciliation and revival of democratic institutions in the State to facilitate peaceful resolution of the Kashmir issue. On the development front, she said the historic opening of cross-LoC links, revival of Mughal Road, setting up of new universities and colleges, upgradation of health sector, extension of cellular service to the State and formulating a transparent recruitment policy were some of the major initiatives of the PDP-led coalition Government. The PDP President asked the party office-bearers to remain cautious of the machinations of certain quarters that have got unnerved by the growing popularity of the PDP and have started conspiring to weaken it using, both overt and covert means. "You have to be highly vigilant as our enemies have ganged up to weaken us," she told the office-bearers. She said the party's biggest strength are its cadres and the common masses and they will not allow the designs of the enemies to succeed.
