Hidden skeletons tumble out of coalition cupboard
9/5/2007 11:06:59 PM
Early Times Reporter
Jammu | Sept 4: With the coalition partner washing their dirty linen in
the open skeletons of business houses planning major projects in
violation of rules have tumbles out of the cupboards. In the course of
leveling allegations against each other, the coalition partners are
now revealing the names of business lobbies who one or the other
partner has been clandestinely promoting.
Names of a Jammu based firm pushing the proposal of an amusement park
and a Delhi based firm planning a shopping mall and a housing colony
has come to the fore. It is learnt that these companies had almost got
their multi-million projects through in clear violation of the norms.
The PDP has alleged that these firms were being promoted by the
Congress. However, a denial is yet to come.
As a Srinagar based news agency flashed a story about the involvement
of Qazi Mohammad Afzal and his predecessor Tariq Hamid Qarra, who is
now Finance Minister, about their involvement in a timer scam the war
of words has got murkier.
The Finance Minister Tariq Hamid Qarra, who is away in London, today
issues from there a strongly loaded statement in which he said that a
conspiracy has been hatched to defame him, his ministerial colleagues
and the party as a whole.
Karra said the fact is that he has put his objections on record on the
file disposed by him as the finance minister last month regarding
constitution of a committee for exploring the possibility of importing
timber by the State Forest Corporation. He said the facts could be
verified from the official records.
Karra said the news item seems to have been purportedly planted to
malign his image as he had recently taken a tough stand regarding the
discrepancies in the Vigilance Organization's anti-corruption drive.
Karra said in the capacity of the Forest Minister, he had also
objected to the transfer of 2,500 kanals of Wildlife land at Jammu to
a Delhi-based corporate house for the construction of an amusement
park, annoying its promoters.
The Finance Minister said that by planting such baseless and
mischievous allegations against him in the media, the behind-the-scene
promoters of the media-campaign would be only exposing themselves
further before the public. He said on his return to Srinagar, he would
place all the facts before the public and expose the persons who are
behind the campaign as their motives were not fulfilled.
Karra has also decided to file a criminal defamatory suit against the
vernacular news agency that had floated the news item in its bulletin
yesterday.
