| And 600 proved lucky | | | Early Times Reporter Jammu |Sept 4: Even though thousands of teachers today rushed in to winter and summer capitals today to attend the first ever high level teacher's day function but some 600 of them were lucky enough to get an announcement from the Chief Minister about their promotion to next higher post. Addressing the teachers' day function, the Chief Minister said that 600 Post graduate teachers and Masters would be promoted as Lecturers very soon. His this announcement was received with thumping applause from the teaching community. Earlier, highlighting the achievements registered in education sector, the Chief Minister said last five years were historic in so far as expansion of education was concerned. However, he said, government had now decided to put a hold on the expansion process for next two years. He said the focus of attention was now being shifted on consolidation of infrastructure and providing teachers in the newly opened and upgraded schools. He gave figures of expansion in education sector since the coalition government assumed power in J&K and said 3542 primary schools and 6000 Education Guarantee Scheme Centres were set up. He said 2760 primary schools, 401 middle schools and 295 high schools were upgraded. He said over 1300 primary school and 134 middle school buildings and 1882 additional class rooms were constructed while 5698 were under construction. He said 4661 Education Guarantee Scheme Centres would be upgraded as primary schools this year. Azad said his government was alive to the problems of the teachers' community. He said several steps were taken to address these problems including removal of pay anomaly between ZEOs and Headmasters, provision of quota for contingent paid employees against Class IV posts in the Recruitment Rules, regularization of CEOs, counting of 5 year service of Rehbar-e-Taleem for pensionary benefits, promotion of 82 senior lecturers as principals and 76 being in the pipeline, promotion of 246 Masters as Headmasters, 126 Headmasters as ZEOs and 1180 teachers as Masters.. Speaking on the occasion, Education Minister, Peerzada Muhammad Sayeed gave details of achievements in Education sector registered during last five years. He said after taking education to door steps of people, the government had now initiated a massive infrastructure development programme for the newly opened and upgraded schools. He said to meet the requirements of teaching staff in these schools, the process of recruitment of teachers had already been set in motion and so far selection for nine districts had been made. Highlighting the role of teachers, he said the state owes them a lot for their dedication who despite adverse situation performed their duty well. Minister for Health and Medical Education, Mangat Ram Sharma appreciated the department for organizing grand functions on the birth anniversary of Dr.Radhakrishnan who, he said, was considered as a role model for the teachers across the country. He said for the first time in the history of the State such functions were organized on Teachers' day. The Chief Minister also gave away awards to 35 teachers of the State for their meritorious services.
