| Azad teaches 'Gandhigiri' to teachers | | | Early Times Reporter Jammu| Sep 4: Repeating the history of last year's Children Day, today on the eve of Teachers' Day which is celebrated across the country coinciding with the birthday of former President of India, Dr Sarvapali Radhakrishnan, Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad once again sought to convey that he believes in the Gandhian principles and asserted that is the only way to get rid of the prevailing evils in the society. As history was made on November 14 last year when over 50,000 children were drawn from across the region to celebrate the Children's Day which coincides with the birthday of first Prime Minister Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru, this year the thousands of teachers were brought in to commemorate the Teacher's Day. A similar function was held in Srinagar also. Addressing the teachers, the Chief Minister Azad said he was dismayed to see that politics and government service, once considered as tools to serve people had metamorphosed into trade with everybody engaged in self aggrandizement. He said moral and social values had received the worst beating as the urge for more money and power increased. He called for self introspection and referred to great leaders like Mahatma Gandhi and Motilal Nehru who abdicated their comforts for the welfare of the masses. He said the situation was reverse today with leaders striving for their own comforts at the cost of the common people. He said despite enjoying global appreciation, the people of the country were forgetting the philosophy of non-violence, ahimsa and satyagraha. He said for building a healthy society the trend had to be reversed and called upon one lakh strong teacher force in the State to take up this responsibility. The Chief Minister highlighted the need to impart value based education to students, saying with improving literacy and living standards "our society is witnessing a corresponding degradation in the value system." He said this indicated that there was something wrong with the way we were educating our children. However, he said he was heartened by the support extended by teachers' association leaders and participating teachers to his war against corruption and said eradication of this evil was his Agenda The Chief Minister said that the government was organizing state level debate on Gandhian Philosophy and its relevance in 21st century separately for college and school students with first prize of Rs one lakh, second prize of Rs 50,000 and two third prizes of Rs 25,000 each. He said the debates would be held at different levels and finals held at the state level. The Chief Minister reminded the teachers of their role as architects of the society and said at a time when values were losing meaning and evils had plagued the society they would have to come forward and prove true to their occupation. He said teachers were not merely government officials concerned with their salary but were charged with the onerous responsibilities of developing human resource and shaping the future of the country. He said side by side with imparting curriculum education to students they had to be the reformists and rid the society of evils and degenerating value system. He said any slackness on their part could prove detrimental for the society as a whole.
