| BJP asked to openly support separate statehood demand | | | Early Times Reporter Jammu|September 5 A former senior BJP and Jan Sang leader, Amarnath Gupta who has served two terms as Vice-President of Jan Sang controlled Jammu Municipal Council, has asked the present state BJP leadership to come out openly in support of separate state of Jammu, instead of playing hide and seek on the issue, which represents the aspirations of the people of Jammu at large. Regretting BJP's equivocal stand on the demand for separate Jammu state and hesitation on its part to whole heartedly and forcefully advocate the demand, despite the party having adopted a resolution in its favour in its working committee meting in the past, Gupta has said that launching a strong movement by the party for Jammu statehood will pay rich political and electoral dividends to the party. It is intriguing that the BJP representatives either in the Round Table Conferences or in the meetings of the Working Groups have never press this issue. Instead they have been forwarding vague suggestions about empowerment of all regions in the political setup of J&K and even making the old hackneyed suggestion of regional councils for the three distinct units of the state, which will be teethless and devoid of any political power, Gupta has said. Gupta has further disclosed that the Jammu State Morcha, whose vice chairmen he had been, was dissolved on the clear understanding that BJP would take up the issue of separate state of Jammu and spearhead the movement for the same and that all the activists of State Morcha would be duly accommodated in the BJP. But neither the BJP has forcefully advocated the cause of separate Jammu state nor has it accommodated the leaders and activists of dissolved Jammu State Morcha, which is betrayal of the understanding and the trust, Gupta has rued. He has warned against attempts from anti Jammu forces to divide Jammu region on communal lines by repeating the old game plan of forming greater Kashmir by including Muslim majority areas of Jammu region in it. Asserting that the demand for separate state of Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh is within the constitutional framework of India, Gupta has said that even Muslims in Rajouri, Poonch and Doda districts are in favour of this demand.
