| Teachers' Day cost dearly to state exchequer, people | | 'Expensive show' fetches nothing to teachers | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | Sept 5 While thousands of teachers who thronged Teachers' Day function venues at Jammu and Srinagar expecting announcement by Chief Minister about extending 'leave encashment' benefits to the fraternity had to return disappointed, the expensive show cost dearly to state exchequer and people. As the organizing of teachers' day at such a large scale reflected the clear intentions of ruling Congress party to garner the support of teachers keeping in view the ensuing elections, for the purpose it had used both official authority and appeasement tactics to manage maximum gathering on the occasion. Sources said that directions were issued from Eduction Ministry to all CEO's and ZEO's to frame a list of teachers in their areas of Jurisdiction and issue the same with strict strictures asking the enlisted officials to attend the function failing which action would be taken against them. At the same time a whisper campaign was launched that Chief Minister would be making a major announcement on the occasion probably that of extending 'leave encashment' (commute) benefits which is a long pending demand of the fraternity. However, to their great dismay teachers assembled at the venues had to go with heavy hearts as Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad restricted his speech to usual rhetoric, praising the teaching community for their role in society. Although teachers were relived of the burden of the expenses to travel from their respective places as they were provided free transport, sources said that hundreds of buses engaged for bringing them to the venue from districts and Tehsils has put a huge burden on the state exchequer. They said on average rupees four thousand were paid for each vehicle carrying the teachers, besides paying Rs 30 to each participant. The extent of the expenses could be assed by the fact that about 30 thousand teachers from across the valley assembled at Sheir-e-Kashmir Park in Srinagar and seven to eight thousand were present at Mini stadium Parade Ground Jammu. Apart from disappointment to teaching community, the people in both the cities were exposed to lot of hardships due to diversion of traffic from the roads leading to venues. The problem was more severe in Srinagar where massive traffic jams were witnessed on all vital roads stranding the commuters for hours together. Observers believe that sending the teachers back without conferring any benefit would prove counter productive for the party in the coming elections
