Jammu | Sep 5
University of Jammu today said that removal of Rekha Chaudhary from the post of HoD of political science has nothing to do with the controversies surrounding her. It, however hinted that her removal has come in wake of an open letter written by her to Chief Minister, Governor and HRD minister.
In communication sent across various media organizations by the dean of academic affairs of Jammu University (JU), the institution stated that while the rules of the university allows suspension in case of misconduct, no such action was taken against the HoD. It further said, “Instead, the Vice-Chancellor acting on the recommendations of the dean academic affairs on Sept 3, appointed Professor Kulwant Kour as the head of the department of political science in the interest of the administration of the university.” The communication added that the HoD is VC’s nominee in the department and clearly Professor Rekha Chudhary’s continuation in the position was untenable.
JU has further said that though Rekha was involved in a controversy, in her capacity as coordinator of Special Assistance Programme (SAP), over a survey conducted on J&K and over alleged plagiarism in writings; yet her removal as HoD has no links with SAP and the survey. It said that a committee that is inquiring into the issue has yet to submit its report.
The university also said that removal of an HoD is an internal matter of the university and change of headship is no punishment. The communication said that JU has an absolute commitment to academic freedom and research, however, it has also a commitment to ensure that norms of conduct are adhered to by all its members.
Stating that the open letter by Rekha that was widely circulated on August 30 besides being sent to the CM, governor and HRD minister had wild and groundless allegations, the communication added that while Jammu University Teachers’ Association had immediately condemned the same; the administration, in as spirit of democracy governance and complete transparency, placed the letter in a meeting of the campus deans and all HoDs on August 31, who unanimously and categorically took note of the breach of code-of-conduct and professional ethics by professor Rekha Chaudhary in writing in her capacity as HoD and resolved that strict action as provided under rules would be taken against her.
