BJP State President Ashok Khajuria today expressed surprise over the manner in which Congress leader and State Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad has gone on the defensive over the issue of divesting Qazi Mohd. Afzal of the Forest portfolio and the latter’s resignation in protest. He said the people of the state were happy when the CM divested Qazi Mohd. Afzal of the Forest Portfolio on account of several irregularities and had expected that the CM was committed to eradicating corruption. He said the people had also expected that the CM would cleanse his council of ministers by taking action against all the ministers belonging to Congress and bureaucrats against whom there are serious charges of corruption to keep his word. By taking a complete U-turn on the whole issue, the CM has once again demonstrated his inability to rein incorrupt elements and provide a corruption free administration to the people. The BJP was, he said, expecting that the CM would also snatch the other portfolio from Qazi Mohd. Afzal, as the Housing and Urban Development department had become a den of corruption under the said leader, but by refusing to accept the resignation of the said minister from the cabinet, Ghulam Nabi Azad has sent a clear signal that he does not have the courage to take cudgels with the PDP for the sake of political power.
Ashok Khajuria urged the CM to assert his authority and not behave like a chicken-hearted person so that the corruption is rooted out from the political establishment, bureaucracy and police and civil administration. He also asked him not to yield to the politics of blackmail being indulged in by the PDP leadership.
Khajuria said that the contents as contained in the CM’s letter to Qazi Mohd. Afzal reveal that it was not the minister but his subordinates who had created a mess in the department. Should it be taken to mean that the CM had taken action against the PDP minister without looking into the working of the Forest department and if, in his opinion, it was the subordinates of the sacked minister who wee responsible for the whole mess, then why did not he initiate action against the guilty and divested the said minister of Forest Portfolio, he asked?
He asked the CM to take the people of the state into confidence on the issue which had led to the whole controversy. Meanwhile, Ashok Khajuria appealed to the State Governor Lt. Gen. (Retd.) S.K. Sinha to intervene as constitutional head of the state of stem the rot and set the things right so that people’s confidence in the government is restored. Ashok Khajuria also criticized the state government, the Education department in particular, for asking all the government teachers of Jammu city to reach Parade Ground, where the state CM was the chief guest in a function organized on Teacher’s Day. He said the education department turned the function into a Congress Rally to please the CM. These teachers should have been allowed to celebrate the Teacher’s Day in their respective schools with their students, he added.
