Jammu|Sep 5 – Romeo Force deployed in the twin districts of Rajouri and Poonch has been continuing its arduous task of containing terrorism in the region with professional acumen, dedication and perseverance with great success. This success has been primarily due to the determination and dedication of the `Angles in Uniform’ who have won the hearts and minds of the local populace.
Operation Sadbhavna, (implying “Goodwill”) takes the form of projects undertaken by Army units under Romeo Force with the objective of development and up liftment of the Awaam. The region has been plagued with lack of developmental projects due to terrorism. The development projects were accordingly launched by Army with people being the “centre of gravity” with an aim of introducing perceptible improvement in the lives of local populace.
The camaraderie established between the common man and the ‘men in uniform’ has become the bane of the terrorists. The goodwill fostered due to welfare and development oriented projects and the mutual respect for each other has isolated the terrorists giving a fillip to “Aman aur Khushali” in the region.
No words underscore the ethos of “Khidmat-e-Khalaq” better than the deeds performed by the soldiers of Romeo Force in the five focus areas of education, health and medicare, women’s empowerment and infrastructure development.
Schools damaged during terrorism have gradually been repaired, renovated, refurbished and are today imparting quality education to local children. Important Sadbhavna projects undertaken by Force in the field of education in the twin districts of Rajouri and Poonch include development of Model School in Village Palma at a cost of Rs 60.16 lakhs, construction of Primary School and Dispensary at Potha at a cost of Rs 27.32 lakhs. Construction of Army School at Kulali, construction of Bal Ashram at Manjakot costing Rs 45 lakhs and Rs 29.6 lakhs respectively. Other major infrastructure development projects undertaken by Romeo Force are construction of a Nari Niketan at Mendhar costing Rs 7.4 lakhs, construction of community centre with DTH, Generator and TV for locals, Renovation of Government Girls Higher Secondary School building costing Rs 5.00 lakhs, construction of road connecting Jerawali Gali and Gursai at a cost of Rs 99.61 lakhs, construction of road Katener – Thanamandi at Rs 24.9 lakhs, construction of road Bafliaz-Kulali at Rs 24 lakhs, vocational training centre at Potha and Community Hall at Bharot costing Rs 8.59 and 5.29 lakhs respectively and establishment of Water Reservoir at Khangangali at a cost of Rs 5.6 lakhs.
Projects worth Rs 1.70 crores are being undertaken by Romeo Force under Operation Sadbhavna in the current year. Besides rebuilding infrastructure, the force also helps the locals by organizing medical cum veterinary camps and sending Mobile Medical Teams to remote, inaccessible areas. On an average 6 to 8 medical cum veterinary camps are conducted by each Rashtriya Rifles battalion during a year. Apart from these to ameliorate the sufferings of locals a Neurotheraphy Camp to provide alternate therapies and reducing dependence on costly allopathic Medicare and two Special Medical Camp for physically challenged were conducted at Daraba, and Surankot, Mendhar, where artificial limbs and aids were distributed free of cost with assistance from Artificial Limb Manufacturing Corporation, Kanpur. The humane approach and commitment to health care has been greatly appreciated by the civil administration as well as the locals.
As part of Alternate Energy Resource Initiatives, Romeo Force has been instrumental in installing 15 Micro hydel Projects (MHPs) under Op Sadbhavna and 40 Micro hydel and 10 Solar Electrification Projects under Ministry of Non Conventional Energy Sources. These MHPs have been installed in remote areas of Rajouri and Poonch districts where electricity was not available. The force has also undertaken projects to electrify Gujjar and Bakkarwal hamlets in remote location in Rajouri and Poonch through Solar Diode Lanterns. This is a unique initiative to tap the vast solar energy in the sunshine rich region.
These initiatives by the troops of Romeo Force under Operation Sadbhavana have made a dramatic and visible impact, fostered goodwill and provided healing touch to the collective psyches of the ‘awaam’ along with building an inseparable bond between `Jawaan ‘ and `Awaam’
