| Gopal Sharma is DG SSB | | | Early Times Reporter Jammu|Sep 6: The Chief Minister's Security Advisor Gopal Sharma has been appointed as new Director General of the paramilitary force Special Services Bureau. Sharma, who headed the Jammu and Kashmir police for over four years and led anti-militancy operations from the front, is a 1972 Indian Police Service (IPS) officer from the state cadre. Sharma, who was the longest serving director general of police (DGP) in the state, was made security advisor to the Jammu and Kashmir chief minister in July this year. Senior IPS officer Kuldeep Khuda took over from him as DGP. "I am very happy in being appointed as DG SSB", Sharma told reporters after the getting the information. He said that the main operation of the SSG was in the north-east. Asked why the SSB wing in Jammu and Kashmir has been wound up he said that after joining the new post in Delhi he will examine the issue and if he felt there was need for reestablishing the wing of the SSB he would do it. Gopal Sharma had proved a successful Director General police because he remained the least controversial police Chief in the troubled state of Jammu and Kashmir. Even as security adviser to the Chief Minister he had realized that his potential was not being utilized for streamlining the security and intelligence agencies and hence was keen to take up some challenging task.
