| Army acts, Maj Gen attacked for misconduct inquiry | | | Early Times Reporter Jammu|Sept 6: In first ever major action against the erring officers, the top authorities in the Indian Army have ordered attachment of a Major General with the Srinagar based Corps headquarters following allegations of sexual harassment by a woman officer. Maj Gen AK Lal, General Officer Commanding of the Leh Division was today attached with the Srinagar based 15 Corps pending inquiry into the allegations against him. This action took place following a complaint of Captain Neha Rawat, a Signal Officer posted in Leh, who accused Maj Gen Lal of misconduct. This is the first major action at top level in the Indian Army which has already seen suicides by two of its women officers. Captain Sushmita Chakravarty has committed suicide in Udhampur while Captain Meghna Raazdan had committed suicide at a camp on the outskirts of Jammu town. Though they committed suicide under different circumstances and any allegations of sexual harassment was not reported to be an immediate cause, but the top brass of Indian Army acted swiftly in case of Captain Neha Rawat. This was the fourth case of sexual harassment filed against any senior officer of the Indian Army so far. However, in all three cases filed earlier, the court of inquiries thus constituted did not find any substance. The action was swift in case of Neha Rawat's complaint primarily for the reason that the case had rocked the Lok Sabha yesterday prompting the Defence Ministry to take action for instilling confidence.
