| Another girl falls pray to wild beast | | Villagers attack police party, 5 cops injured | | Early Times Reporter Srinagar | Sep 07: A girl was killed in a fresh attack by a stray leopard in Handwara area of Kupwara district in North Kashmir triggering a protest demonstration by the locals, who pelted stones and thrashed police personnel injuring five of them. Reports reaching here revealed that leopard pounced upon a teen aged girl, identified as Shugufta daughter of Muhammad Ramzan, when she was sitting outside her house in Machipora village of Handwara. The beast, sources told sources, killed the girl on the spot and fled in the nearby forest area. News of the attack spread in the area like wildfire and people in large number came on the road and staged a protest demonstration against the wildlife authorities, who failed to trace these stray animals. Sources added that a contingent of police reached to the spot and tried to disperse the mob. However, the protestors turned violent and started pelting stones on the cops. A police ambulance, which was shifting body of the deceased, was attacked by the mob and its window panes were also smashed. At least three cops were also trashed by the angry mob, sources added. An official spokesman said that at least five cops were injured in the attack by the mob and the police ambulance suffered great damage in the attack. Senior police officers later rushed to the spot and assured the villagers that wildlife department would be impressed upon to depute a team so that the wild beasts can be tracked down. Locals say that these stray animals have created havoc in the area and numbers of people have lost their lives in less than a year.
