The Chief of Army Staff, General JJ Singh accompanied by President Army Wives Welfare Association (AWWA) arrived on a two day farewell visit to Headquarters Northern Command here yesterday. He was received by Lieutenant Genreal HS Panag, General Officer Commanding-in-Chief Northern Command on his arrival at Bikram Park helipad. General Singh has had a long association with Jammu and Kashmir. During his successful command of commanding 79 Mountain Brigade in general area Baramulla, he was injured during an operation; ‘Mouse Trap’ which was in keeping with his persona of always leading from the front.
Even after taking over a Chief of Army Staff his close association with the people of Jammu and Kashmir continued and played a stellar role in the rehabilitation of victims of the devastating earth quake that rocked Jammu and Kashmir in October
2005. Under his guidance the Army adopted the villages of Tithwal, Churunda and Khari Karmara which have now been developed into model villages with modern facilities. Remembering the martyrs of Northern Command the Chief of Army Staff laid a wreath at the Dhurva war memorial. In his address to all officers in the Dhurva Auditorium complimented all ranks for their contribution in the ongoing low intensity conflict. He apprised them of the quickening pace of modernization in the Indian Army and also talked of the evolution of the Indian Army; which could now count amongst the foremost armies in the world. A Soldier general, he interacted with all ranks of Udhampur station.
