| Panthers begin home work | | | Early Times Reporter Jammu |Sep 8: Riding high on its four-seat strength in the assembly, the beleaguered Panthers Party is all set to explore possibilities of victory in more constituencies than it contested in 2002 elections. While the lead coalition partners Peoples Democratic Party and the Congress and also the Opposition National Conference are yet to set their poll strategies right, the Panthers Party has already started home work on identifying the potential candidates for the upcoming elections. The party will initially form a panel which will make assessment of the potential of the candidates who can be chosen for the forthcoming elections. Those included in the panel would be asked to carry out campaign in favour of the Panthers Party in their respective constituencies. According to leader of the Panthers Party in the Assembly, Harsh Dev Singh, "though it is too early to make a final list of the party candidates but we are preparing a panel so that each candidate short-listed could be watched while mobilisinf peoples' support for him and the party." He said here today that besides the party chief four MLAs would accompany, one by one, each prospective candidate so that they got sufficient time in working the constituencies and interacting with the people. Harsh Dev Singh said that "we have received deputations of people from Pooch, Rajouri, Sunderbani, Nowshehra and other areas seeking Panthers Party mandate which indicated that we have made inroads in various areas of the Jammu region."In reply to a question he said that the Panthers Party plans to field its candidates from 35 to 40 constituencies which included atleast seven to 10 from the Kashmir valley. He stated that in 2002 the Panthers Party had contested 36 seats and won four and during the next election "our target is to bag more than 20 seats." Asked for the reason for his optimism Harsh Dev said that people had become disenchanted not only with the Congress and the National Conference but with the BJP too so that Panthers Party alone could satisfy the aspirations of people. He said that large groups of people keep on meeting leaders of Panthers Party and the common refrain is that they feel cheated by the National Conference and the Congress
