| SRTC employees bare chests to protest | | | Early Times Reporter Jammu, Sept 8: A large number of SRTC employees, in topless, on saturday staged a protest march against continued apathy of the state government towards the hapless and poor employees of the corporation. Shouting anti-government slogans the protestors, baring their chest marched from Bikram chowk blocking traffic on the busy Tawi bridge over for one hour. "Yaan chursi chodho yaan humey salaray do, humey sarkar girana bhi aata hai banana bhi aata hai" were the main slogans raised by the demonstrators whose strike entered the sixth day thereby paralyzing the interstate and inter district transport services operated by the SRTC. The federation leaders including Amreek Singh, Ashok Mehra, Pawan Sharma, Balvinder Singh and Manjeet Singh berated the state govt for its failure in solving the problems of employees who were forced to starve as a result of non-payment of salaries for the last four months. The union leaders castigated the transport minister Hakeem Mohd Yaseen for having resorted to back door appointments in the corporation. They urged the Chief Minister to intervene and get all these back door appointments canceled. The Union leaders threatened to intensify their agitation and resorting to self immolation if the govt did not release the salaries of the employees for the last four months. They demanded introduction of Dearness Allowance and in its absence release COLA which has been withheld since 2003.They said arrears of COLA stand pending since 1998 and 25 installments of COLA withheld by the management be merged in the pay of the employees.They also demanded regularization of services of drivers and casual workers who have been appointed on consolidated wages.
