Hard pressed of time Sonia not likely to resolve coalition crises on her Kashmir Visit
9/8/2007 11:55:09 PM
ET Special Correspondent
Jammu | Sep 8
Believing in the Agade "where eloquence is silver, silence is gold", the Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad is maintaining studied silence over the stalemate and crises in his government and a stand off between him and the former Forest Minister in his cabinet Qazi Mohammad Afsal and in the process between the Congress and the PDP. Or alternatively Azad puts faith in the dictum that time is the best healer. But this Ostrich like attitude, letting the crises to prolong is adversely affecting the governance in the state, with uncertainty looming large over the stability of the government. The speculation that Azad is depending upon the Congress President Sonia Gandhi to be trouble shooter once again, who may avail of the opportunity of her visit to Srinagar on September 11, to attend a function being organized by Women Development Corporation is not being put much weight by those who are on board about the tight schedule of Mrs. Gandhi during his forthcoming visit. With the PDP patron Mufti Mohammad Sayeed having already left the state for New Delhi, from where he is schedule to go to UK, there is hardly any chance of Mrs. Gandhi taking initiative in resolving the crises facing Azad government. Since the PDP President Mehbooba Mufti is believed to be much harder bargainer than her father, the circles close to Azad and his advisers would not like him to settle any deal with PDP in the absence of Mufti Sayeed.
Militants involving more women in their game plan:
The report about the arrest of a female Law student from Jammu, belonging to Poonch district and the daughter of a police head constable, who was carrying a consignment of deadly explosives given to her by a top Hizbul Mujahiddin Militant in Surankote, for handing over to the HM militants in Jammu, to carry out terror strikes in the winter capital of the city to take revenge of the killing of Jaish-e-Mohammad divisional commander, Saifullah Qari and the rest of his close associate Zafar Iqbal, indicates the new modus operandi and tactics being used by the militants to hoodwink the security agencies, believing that the females and particularly the educated ones can be least suspected. That the Maruti car in which 21 year old Nahida Altaf, the daughter of a police head constable, Altaf Hussain was transporting the exclusive materials from surankote to Jammu, was being driven by her father and were also carrying her mother puts doubt on the bonafides of the police officer also. Although the high police sources have absolved their head constable Altaf Hussain of any involvement in the matter, stating that he might not be aware of the fact that his daughter was hiding heavy explosives in the dicky of the car, which he was driving, but this version of the police lacks conviction, particularly in the light of police version that they had the prior information about the involvement of Nahida Altaf in the terrorist acts and her close links with Hizbul Muzahiddin. Any lenient view taken by the police and effort to shield their own head constable has dangerous implications. But at the same time no innocent should be made to pay for the crime of his kith and kin.
Kashmiris septic about rail link to valley :
Contrary to the General expectation a major setback to Kashmir rail link project as a result of a portion of 3 Km tunnel near Udampur caving in and major seepage problem hampering progress in other three tunnels, has not caused much anxiety to the common Kashmiris, who are confused over the positive and negative points of the extension of rail to the valley. The secessionists and the separatists have been feeding the gullible common Kashmiri folk that the project of linking Kashmir valley by rail with the rest of the country, instead of government of India's concern for the economic well being of the Kashmiris, is aimed at strengthening the hold of India over Kashmir. The hardcore secessionists of the like of Geelani are also indulging in the whispering campaign that the rail link between Kashmir and the rest of India will import all the vices into Kashmir. However the commissioning of 11000 crore rail project, 80% of the line of which passes through tunnels, in all probability, is going to be much behind the schedule, in view of the unpredicted developments and mishaps on the highly fragile mountains.
