EARLY TIMES REPORTER
SRINAGAR, AUGUST 14 :
Governor Lt. Gen (Retd) S K Sinha has called upon people to fully organise themselves for giving a united fight to cancer of terrorism which has been eating into the vitals of Jammu and Kashmir.
In a message on the 60th Independence Day, the Governor said that while the State is marching towards a better tomorrow, security of the people remains a major concern particularly in the wake of terrorists’ atrocities like throwing grenades, slitting throats of innocent citizens and massacre of soft targets. A whole generation has been virtually destroyed in our State in the ongoing militancy. The number of innocents killed by terrorists exceeds the numbers of those killed in fighting for a so called freedom struggle, he added.
‘Time has now come to fight terrorism unitedly’, General Sinha added.
Lauding the Security Forces and police for combating militancy, the Governor said that many of them have made the supreme sacrifice. ‘The record of our Army in the conduct of such operations has been far superior to that of foreign armies in Baluchistan, Wazirstan, Afghanistan, Iraq or Lebanon. Notwithstanding this, incidents of excesses or human rights violations have occurred and have been severely death with. The guilty have been given exemplary punishment. However, it is a matter of grave concern that certain elements have been constantly vilifying the Army on the basis of false or highly exaggerated reports. This vitiates the atmosphere, he said.
The Governor expressed concern over terrorist’ attacks on the people and tourists and said that Kashmir, known for its hospitality, has bled due to attacks on tourists. This has shattered the tourism industry which is the mainstay for the livelihood of the people in the Valley. He said the peace loving people of Kashmir have vehemently decried these acts of terrorists and held protest demonstrations to register their anguish.
Referring to the role of the Army in coming to the rescue of the civilian population at the hour of need, the Governor said that the Army has always splendidly risen to the occasion during calamities whether during snow tsunami and earthquake last year or the recent floods in Ladakh. The civic action programme under Operation Sadhbavna has been truly remarkable giving a people friendly image to the Army in the rural areas. Over 500 micro-hydel projects have been completed and the target of 1000 such projects is likely to be completed by October this year. He said this will bring about a mini-economic revolution for the people living on the mountains.
The Governor reiterated that Kashmiriyat holds the key to the future of our State, restoring peace and prosperity in this paradise on earth. ‘One of the highlights of our recently concluded successful Amarnath Yatra was the 5-Day Sufi music extravaganza organised by Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board in cooperation with other agencies. The participation of top artists of our country, as also some artists from Pakistan, made this event truly memorable. The music reverberated in the hearts of many thousands of the audience, reviving feelings of Kashmiriyat amongst them’, he said.
Felicitating the people on the Independence Day, the Governor said that this day reminds us of the sacrifices of our valiant freedom fighters who laid down their lives to see the motherland free from alien rule and contributed towards building an India where avenues of progress and prosperity are available to all, irrespective of their religion, race or region.
Carrying forward the mission of our great leaders, he said, the nation has made considerable progress in the fields of economic development, social reforms and political evolution. ‘We are the leading Nation in providing human resource to the world. Today, India is seen as a strong and stable country with a deep-rooted democracy, which is steadily emerging as a major economic power’, he said.
In this odyssey of Nation’s progress and development, General Sinha said Jammu and Kashmir has been a proud partner in scaling new heights. Notwithstanding the reign of terror unleashed by criminals masquerading as Jehadis, sound foundations of development are being laid in the State.
‘I salute the courageous people of Jammu and Kashmir and our valiant Security Forces for their united fight against the demon of terrorism. The day is not far when we will triumph against the cult of violence and restore Kashmir to its pristine glory’, the Governor said.
