Dogra Art Museum non-existent, hardly any tourist ventures

Tourism, the backbone of the state economy, has been prioritized as one of the major sectors by the Jammu and Kashmir government but regrettable little is being done to attract the visitors especially the Vaishnodevi pilgrims to the Dogra Art Museum housing great and varied heritage of Dogra culture.
According to sources the Dogra Art Museum has become non existent as hardly any visitor ventures there as it remains shut for most of the period. The Museum has been a great attraction of the tourists in the past but with the passage of time hardly any visitor pays visit here as it remains open only during the working hours applicable to government offices.
Though it has been a practice all over the country that such museums remains mostly open at the evening hours for the tourists; the situation is altogether different in the Dogra Art Museum which remains closed at the evenings. Thus the result is obvious.
A cursory glance of the records of the Museum reveal that hardly a handful of locals have been visiting the Museum and the revenue collected by entry fee runs in just few hundreds. The governments as well as department seem to be non- serious on this count and have failed to attract tourists and pilgrims to the Museum..
Sources said that only in three days of Jammu Festival, museum collected revenue of seventy thousand because it was opened for whole days.
According to sources, visitors love to visit Amar Mahal Museum where a golden chair and some modern arts paintings are displayed while Dogra Art Museum houses world famous Basholi paintings and rare manuscript.
Sources also revealed that the government’s failure to propagate the Dogra Art Museum among the visitors has also been one of the reasons of less attraction of the tourists. If the government is sincere to promote tourism in the winter capital it should go whole hog in attracting the Vaishnodevi pilgrims to the Museum so that they could enriched about the rich culture heritage of the Dogras. Similar is the case with the Kela Kendra which also attracts minimal number of visitors.
