Jammu|Sep 10: Who is smarter politician –Mehbooba or Azad? In presence of Sonia Gandhi they tried to outsmart each other but eventually both ended scoring a point over each other.
Realizing the aptness of occasion, when Sonia Gandhi was in Srinagar today to address a women's convention, the PDP President Mehbooba Mufti called for enhancing the strength of women in Jammu and Kashmir Police. Making it quite an emotional scene for Sonia as she recalled how Rajiv Gandhi was killed, Mehbooba asked the visiting Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil to consider enhancing strength of women in Jammu and Kashmir Police as they being victims of violence can protect them.
Interestingly, Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad who was present on the occasion and had to speak after Mehbooba had finished, did not leave the ball in Sonia or Patil's court. He made a smart move by announcing a battalion exclusively for women in Jammu and Kashmir Police. Mehbooba might have earned appreciation of the fellow women present on the occasion for speaking in their support, but Azad scored the final point for making a formal announcement. The announcement, interestingly, came to a thundering applause.
In her speech Mehbooba Mufti said that she had requested union home minister Shivraj Patil for additional recruitment of women in state police so that they could handle the increasing crime rate against women, effectively.
Mufti added that unfortunately the state for the last few years has witnessed an increase in crime rate against women which could be dealt with only by increasing the number of women police.
She added that Ms Gandhi has been herself a victim who lost her husband and no one other than Ms Gandhi can understand the suffering and pain inflicted due to the incident better. Mufti observed that a large number of women in Jammu and Kashmirwere hit directly or indirectly due to the turmoil and their sufferings need to be mitigated as soon as possible.
Not leaving any opportunity for an assurance or consideration, Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad made a quick move. Chief Minister announced raising of one battalion of women police in the State, adding that it would provide opportunities of employment to women in the state.
