Sinagar|Sep 10 - Stressing the need for making education job oriented, Governor Lt. General (Retd) S K Sinha today said that equipped with high standard professional academics young Indians are making waves on the basis of education and intellectual prowess around the world.
‘We have come a long way since colonial era when Indians were taken as indentured labour working almost worked as slaves in different parts of the world. Now the presence of newer generation is felt all around and our boys and girls are making an indelible mark in specialized fields the world over’, the Governor said, adding that this portrays the picture of new India emerging as a major global power of tomorrow.
The Governor was inaugurating the National Seminar cum Workshop on Higher Education Sector: Quality Value Based Education sponsored by National Assessment and Accreditation Council and organized by Internal Quality Assurance Cell at Government Degree College, Bemina here this morning.
Elaborating on making the education job oriented keeping in view the needs of the job market; General Sinha said that graduates should be equipped with employability capabilities of the highest order. ‘We need to produce graduates with self earning capabilities and not for government jobs only’, he said, adding that this will be beneficial for the society as a whole.
The Governor dwelt on the historical perspective of education and said that emphasis has been laid on acquiring education by all the societies in all the times. In this context, he referred to Prophet Mohammed (PBUH) who said that if need be one must go to distant places including China for acquiring education.
General Sinha said that East had developed education much earlier than the people in West which is substantiated by the discovery of zero and astronomical finding that the world is round. With the advent of time, the West made big strides in the field of education and the East showed a slight resistance initially towards western education. The educational system, he said, has undergone a big shift with specializations in every field. He said that this calls for designing the education as per the needs of the changing times.
On the value based education, the Governor dismissed the apprehensions that modern education was too materialistic and said that with proper guidance and direction, in consonance with our glorious heritage and culture, the youth can be prepared for meeting all the challenges of modern world. Quoting Mahatma Gandhi’s famous words ‘ I want to keep windows of my mind open to winds from outside while keeping my feet firmly on my soil’ and hoped that this will inspire the participants to deliberate on the sensitive subject of value based education.
Commissioner/Secretary Higher Education, Mr Pramod Jain said that education has to be multidimensional to foster physical, mental, intellectual, spiritual, moral and aesthetic dimensions. He hoped that the workshop will rededicate itself to the task of value based education and sensitize the student community in this direction.
Principal of the College, Mrs Tadzin Joldan and Director, College Education Mr N D Wani also spoke on the occasion. Ms Leela Ramachandran chaired the inaugural session of the two day seminar.
The Governor also released a souvenir and the college news letter on the occasion.
The seminar is being attended by academicians and heads of various colleges and educational institutions.
