| Flogging a dead horse, inter college sports competitions in dire straits | | No competition in inter-college gymnastics | | Early Times Reporter JAMMU|Sep 10 Much to the chagrin of sports-lovers yet again the annual ritual of holding the inter-college competitions has started. While the men’s swimming event has witnessed a poor response, the competitions in gymnastics turned out to be a flop show today. Organised every year by the Department of Physical Education, University of Jammu by involving both private and government affiliated colleges, the competitions have literally become a futile exercise. As against nine entries (five in men and four in women section) in the discipline of gymnastics, only one team of the Government College for Women (GCW), Parade came to the venue at Gymnasium Hall of the University. In men’s section, the entries for participation were submitted by GGM Science College, Degree College Kathua, PG Departments, Government MAM College and Degree College Udhampur. In women’s section, Degree College Kathua, PG Departments, GGM Science College and GCW Parade had submitted the entries. It has been reliably learnt that since the last four to five years only five percent of the affiliated colleges turn up for the inter-college competitions in most of the events. Except for cricket, the degree colleges in Jammu Province hardly show any interest in other disciplines. “Fed up with the tendency of walkovers and lack of response from the colleges even after submitting the entries well in advance that too in a big number, this time during the meeting of the Physical Training Instructors (PTI) from the affiliated colleges, it was decided to introduce some stringent measures to check lackadaisical attitude of colleges,” said Assistant Director Physical Education, University of Jammu, Dr Sonam Angchuk. He added that majority of these PTIs were in favour of imposing some kind of penalty on at least those teams, which fail to turn up after submitting the entries. “The matter is under the active consideration of the Vice-Chancellor Prof Amitabh Mattoo and needs a final approval,” disclosed Dr Angchuk. It may be mentioned here that colleges, whether government or private, charge sports fee from students that eventually run into lakhs of rupees.
