| Governor exhorts youth to practice, propagate rich Kashmir heritage | | Centenary celebrations of J&K Scouts & Guides | | Early Times Reporter Srinagar | Sep11- Governor Lt Gen (Retd) S K Sinha today exhorted youth to be in the vanguard for practicing and propagating rich ideals of Kashmir heritage. Presiding over the centenary celebrations of J&K Scouts and Guides at Kashmir University Campus this afternoon, the Governor said that amity, brotherhood and peace are the hallmark of the heritage of the beautiful valley. General Sinha said the people of Kashmir are inheritors of their glorious past who have kept aloft the flame of brotherhood during most testing times and hoped that they will send this message to the whole country, and in fact to the whole world. He said the scouting movement too stands for brotherhood and peace and it is befitting that this activity is gaining momentum in Kashmir like other parts of the country. In this era of globalization which is also known as the age of knowledge, the Governor observed that along side physical activities the youth of Kashmir will continue to keep themselves with the ornament of knowledge and face the world with much more confidence and vigour. 'It is equally important to build the character by adhering to the values of humanity', he maintained and hoped that the youngsters of today will become proud citizens of tomorrow. The Governor noted with satisfaction that the scout and Girl Guide movement is gaining desired momentum in Kashmir and referred to the proposed mega rally being organized in February next in which over one lakh youngsters are likely participating. He exuded confidence that the new generation will carry upon themselves the responsibilities of the nation with valour and fortitude. Identifying himself with the scouts, General Sinha said that he too was a scout and was very impressed with the message conveyed by the daughter of the founder of this great movement, Badin Powell, when she visited their school in Bihar. He said Badin Powell's first portion of life was dedicated to the Army and his contribution is immense in inculcating the spirit of discipline and amity among youth. He said it is really heartening to give pleasure to others by selfless and dedicated service and called upon the youth to keep this in mind in their day to day dealings. Vice Chancellor, Kashmir University, Prof Abdul Wahid said that scouting is a value based educational movement which inculcates the spirit of patriotism, brotherhood and love among youngsters. 'The impact of this activity in childhood has a long lasting impact on the overall personality of a person', he said, adding that once a scout, always a scout. Chief State Commissioner, J&K Scouts & Guides, Khawaja Farooq Renzu expressed the hope that the movement will flourish in Kashmir in a big way, saying that lot many youngsters are getting attracting to this activity which forges camaraderie and brotherhood among youth. He said the Kashmiri youth portray a picture of amity and love, upon whom lies the great responsibilities of steering the state to peace and progress. He said that in the land of Sheikh Noor-ud-Din Noorani and Bulbul Shah, the message of peace has to be carried forward across all barriers and boundaries. Renzu said that the plant of scouting sown by Maulana Abul Kalam Azad and nourished by President Hidaytullah and other towering leaders has grown into a big tree, under the shade of which millions of youngsters were striving to make this land more beautiful and peaceful. In Kashmir, he said the scouting movement endeavours for bringing about a healthy transformation in tourism, education and health sectors which hold key to progress and development. He said that 400 participants, some of them from Delhi and Jammu, are participating in this event. Earlier, the organization had launched a rally for preservation of environment and popularization of Chinar tree. He also read out messages from Chief Minister, Ghulam Nabi Azad and Chief Scout of the organization, Justice (Retd) Ranganath Misra, former Chief Justice of India. Several other speakers also spoke on the occasion and highlighted the importance of scouting movement. The Governor also released 'Aab Chu Dazan' penned by Farooq Renzu and gave away mementos to scouts and guides who have attained distinction at various national level events. The Vice Chancellor presented two cheques of Rs 14 lakhs each to the Governor, one for State Red Cross Society on behalf of Private B Ed colleges of the Valley. On the occasion, the scouts and guides presented a colorful programme, the highlight of which was a song penned by Farooq Renzu.
