| SAI helps young Jammu footballers get real exposure | | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | Sep 11 Just one-month old in the SAI non-residential scheme the young talented footballers of the temple city have gained a lot. Not only they played at the national level competing with better stuff from other SAI run hostels and training centers around the country but six among them attended SAI India camp and one of them made it to the final 16 of the SAI India team. Soon after the launching of the Non-Residential Scheme in Jammu by the Sports Authority of India (SAI) on August 5, the incharge Sports Training Centre (STC) Udhampur, B S Tirthi, who looks after SAI activities in J&K, received an invitation of inter-SAI hostels and training centres national tournament and on August 10 a 16-member team left for Sonepat in Haryana where the boys attended a week-long camp of North Zone teams. This was disclosed to EARLY TIMES REPORTER by SAI coordinator and incharge football for Non-Residential Scheme in Jammu, Mohinder Verma, who also accompanied the team during the fortnight tour of Haryana and Uttar Pradesh. After attending a camp at Sonepat, the J&K SAI team, according to Verma took part in the All India inter-SAI Hostel and training centre tournament at Lucknow from August 22 to August 24. He proudly informed that six J&K under-17 SAI boys were also picked up for the camp organized selecting the national team representing SAI in the Governor’s Cup at Chandigarh and one boy Dheeraj Maini (goalkeeper) is in the team. These boys are Dhanjay Sharma, Dhanish Khanna, Sahil Lehal, Abhimanyu Saini, Rahul Ghai and Dheeraj Maina. “Three more boys from J&K, who are above 17 years of age, have also been named for camp to be held at Sonepat for selecting a team for Subroto Cup and followed by the international exposure,” said Verma. The selected boys for the above 17-year camp are Varun Sharma, Vinay Sotra and Vishal Kumar. Subrato Cup is scheduled to start from September 14. It is pertinent to mention here that SAI has selected 46 young footballers in the age group between 14 years and 19 years for the first-ever Non-Residental (day-boarding) Scheme in Jammu.
