| Annul Trout Fish production touches sixty lakh | | Initiate steps to boost trout fish production: PAC to Department | | Early Times Reporter Srinagar|Sep 11 – In view of the increased demand of trout fish in the state the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) of Legislative Assembly has directed the Fisheries Department to take steps to increase its production viz-a-viz revenue generation from its proceeds. The Committee also asked for identifying more such sources where the feasibility of trout fish could be possible. The PAC comprising its chairman, Mian Altaf Ahmed and Members Mr. Raman Bhallah, Mr. Mula Ram, Mr. Abdul Rehman Veeri, Mr. Sartaj Madni and Mr. Mohammad Aslam Khan inspected the main source of trout fish. Trout fish farm at Kokernag and took stock of the activities there. The Committee evinced keen interest in the activities carried out by the Department in the farm and get acquainted of the technology adopted for producing the rear species of trout fish. While briefing the Committee about the performance and programmes of the Department, Director Fisheries Mr. T. Angchook informed that Trout Fish Farming Project Kokernag was commenced in the year 1985 at a cost of Rs.5 crore with the financial assistance of European Economic Community (EEC). This farm is producing 10 lakh trout fish seeds annually which is presently having two hatcheries. This mother project which initially had the capacity of 1 lakh Rainbow Trout Eyed ova imported from UK with survival rate of 85 per cent and subsequently the stocks were raised up to the brood stock level. A number of rearing units were established through out the state and have been stocked with the seed of Rainbow trout. The Department was facing constraint in raising trout stock due to non-availability of pelleted feed. Subsequently a feed mill has been established in the premises of the project. With this the Department has been able to raise Brown Trout at the Project by formulating feed for this specie. He said that presently the Department has 28 sale outlets at different places throughout the state and meeting the requirements of people with the proceeds of sale of trout fish, the Department has earned the revenue over Rs.87 lakh during the year 2006-07. The yearly production of trout fish from all farms is about 60 lakh, he added. For giving further boost to the development of various species of fishes, the Department provides a hundred present subsidy assistance to the unemployed youth to establish their own units for livelihood under Prime Minister’s Reconstruction Programme. A large number of youth are coming and taking benefit of the scheme, he maintained.
