| J&K wins NZ championship third time | | Rousing welcome overwhelms state climbers | | Early Times Reporter R.S Pura | Sep 12 They not only made it for the third straight time romping home with the coveted North Zone Sport Climbing championship trophy but they also added another feather in their cap when they pocketed North Zone Youth championship. Undoubtedly, the state climbers kept their nerves and the hardwork paid rich dividends. Both the championships were organized simultaneously by Salwan Public School, Gurgaon (Haryana) from September 6 to September 9.On their return bringing home the coveted trophies, these climbers were extended a rousing welcome by the J&K Mountaineering Association and the management of the MNDP School, here. MNDP School is the only institution in the state which has the infrastructure of sporting climbing. In the Zonal Championship, in which 12 medals were at stake (4 Gold, 4 silver and 4 bronze), J&K won two gold, two silver and three bronze to claim the championship for the third time. Delhi won one gold and one bronze to be the runners up, while Haryana also clinched one gold medal. The remaining two silver medals were won by Indian Tibet Border Police (ITBP) and Uttarkhand, said general secretary of the Association, Dr C K Khajuria. Completely dominating in the Women’s category, J&K won all the medals in “lead” as well as in “speed” climbing competitions. While Bhawna Sharma, Shivati Koul and Rohini Chib won the first three positions respectively in “Lead” climbing Shivati, Rohini and Bhawna clinched the first three places in speed climbing respectively. A bronze medal was won by Suraj Singh in speed climbing in the Men’s category. Meanwhile, in the maiden edition of the North Zone Youth Championship out of a total of 36 medals in ‘lead’ and ‘speed’ climbing in three categories of Youth –B (14-15 years), Youth-A (16-17 years) and Junior (18-19 years), J&K climbers won seven gold, six silver and one bronze to win the championship.In addition to the eight medal winners, two other climbers of J&K Puneet Sharma and Anil Kumar, who secured 4th place in their respective categories, have also selected in the North Zone team for the National Sport Climbing Competition scheduled to be held at Nehru Institute of Mountaineering, Uttarkashi from November 21 to November 25 November.Giving more informations, Dr Khajuria said that Jammu and Kashmir also won all the four medals in the sub-junior championship which was conducted at the Zonal level only from this year. The team was led by national medalists, Harjot Kour and Shivani Raj Kaith. Rajiv Sharma won both the Lead and Speed titles. Shivani Raj and Harjot also clinched a silver medal each in Lead and Speed title. Another J&K climber Princy Choudhary won a bronze medal. In all, about 150 climbers from Delhi, Haryana, Punjab, Uttarkhand, ITBP besides J&K participated in the 4-day long championship which was organized by Salwan Public School, Gurgaon under the aegis of North Zone Sport Climbing Committee, New Delhi. Ram Khajuria, a former secretary of Mountaineering Association of J&K and a qualified national judge in sport climbing was the president of the Jury.
