| 6 Sikh LI bn to represent in Congo | | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | Sep 12 Lieutenant General Susheel Gupta, Deputy Chief of Army Staff (Information System and Training) addressed the contingent of 6 SIKH LIGHT INFANTRY BATTALION GROUP earmarked to represent the country in United Nations Mission in Democratic Republic of Congo (MONUC). 6 SIKH Light Infantry raised in 01 October 1963, has been nominated on the basis of their outstanding performance in 1965 and 1971 wars and thereafter in Counter Insurgency operations in the North East and Jammu & Kashmir. The unit has won accolades from one and all for their operational and humanitarian efforts in insurgency prone areas. This gallant battalion has the honour of being awarded the battle honour of KALIDHAR, Theatre honour of J & K, COAS Unit Citation, GOC-in-C appreciation and long tally of Gallantry awards including 01 Mahavir Chakra, 02 Vir Chakra, 01 Saurya Chakra, 11 Sena Medal, 10 Mention in Despatches, 19 Chief of Army Staff Commendation Card and 14 GOC-in-C Commendation Card. On the occasion the Deputy Chief of Army Staff (IS&T), mentioned about the outstanding work being done by the Indian Contingents in various United Nations Peace Keeping Operations in the past and expected the same from 6 SIKH LIGHT INFANTRY BATTALION GROUP. He reminded the troops of the challenging task ahead of them, which requires utmost dedication, devotion and the humanitarian approach for ensuring peace in Democratic Republic of Congo, said a PIB (Defence Wing) release.
