JAMMU JULY-1- There was no end to the happiness and joy when a 80-year Ashro Devi of Nala Thangar Hiranagar met her son nearly after two decades. The entire family was joyous when they heard about the release of their family member who had departed them in 1988.
Babu Ram son of Kesar Chand of Nala Thangar Kathua was one among of the 19 Indian prisoners released by the Pakistan Government. He was arrested by the Pakistani Rangers on April 6, 1988 while he was crossing the border.
According to the sources, Babu Ram was working as an informer with an intelligence agency and had been to Pakistan many a times.
While talking to EARLY TIMES, Babu Ram said that he suffered an imprisonment of 10 years in the jail besides nine years in detention allegedly for various offences. During this period he did not get any assistance from the agency, he was working for, he said, adding that the promises made to him by his employer proved all false. He said he was assured by the agency that in case he gets trapped in Pakistan, his family would be provided Rs. 2 lakh but despite 19 years in oblivion, the family members were not provided a penny, he regretted.
Feeling cheated by his employer, Babu Ram feels solace on his release from long detention. After joining back to his family members at his home land, he wants to forget the bitter past, he maintained.
‘I used to be in his memories when my son was in prison, Ashro Devi said adding that he used to write from Kot Lakhpat Jail Lahore impressing the need for some political approach for his release. ‘Having no excess to the authorities who matter, she said, our son suffered heavily and once he stopped writing, I lost all hopes of his survival said Ashro mother of Babu Rama in a chocked voice with tears rolling down from her subdued eyes. However, with the release of his son ‘she got a new lease of life’, she exclaimed. .
But today when he is staying with her son, she does not want to recall the past. But the pain of Babu Ram and her mother does not stop here. Babu Ram who was married and father of a daughter also deserted him when they knew that he was put under detention in Pakistan.
