| Army to raise more units of Sniffer Dogs in J&K | | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | Sep13 The army continues to bank on sniffer dogs for detection of explosives, mines.Since these sniffer dogs can detect high and low grade explosives, metallic and plastic mines and intruders the army have decided to raise a large sniffer dog force so that they are able to track down fleeing intruders, mine fields, mined bridges, militant hideouts in the border areas of Jammu and Kashmir. A recent survey carried out by the army experts has revealed that the search success rates by the sniffer dogs has been 84 per cent against 32 per cent recorded individual search carried out by security personnel and 48 per cent search done by equipment. A senior army functionary said that the services rendered by the sniffer dogs in detecting ambush sites, snippers, enemy hideouts, arms cache and infiltration has been a remarkable feat. He said that the services rendered by the army dog ‘Bhola’ has earned the title of a gallant soldier. This dog and others have been trained to sniff improvised explosives like chlorate mix which cannot be detected by the explosive detectors. These dogs have the capacity for detecting explosives concealed in suit cases, boxes, pressure cookers and cylinders. These can also detect transient human bombs because of higher sense of discrimination. The army has been training various breeds of dogs including Labrador, german shephard,malinois, dobberman and boxer. A senior officer said that the sniffer dogs deployed extensively did a brilliant job during operation Parakaram and the forces bank on them for sanitizing buildings vehicles, roads and helipads.They have the capacity to track 6-8 kms track on 24-48 hours old scent and have proved most helpful during cordon and search operations because they can pick up any sound or movement up to 200 metres.
