| Govt thinks strategy to hold urban influx | | | Early Times Reporter Jammu|Sep 13: Worried over fasted urbanization pace in Jammu and Kashmir, the state government has planned concerted measures to give the rural inhabitants facilities at their doorsteps for which they rush to settle in the urban areas. Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad is personally monitoring a development strategy aimed at discouraging rural migration and creation of gainful employment avenues in villages itself. For the last several decades it had been observed that rural population was migrating to cities resulting in heavy pressure on already squeezing resources of cities as also causing adverse effect on economic development of villages due to shifting of affluent people. It may be mentioned here that Jammu and Kashmir has highest rate of urbanization in the country and this has become a cause of concern for the government. The Chief Minister has said that the government would concentrate on creating facilities and opportunities in villages and remote areas to arrest this trend. There has been a 40 per cent to 50 per cent hike in the pace of urbanization in Jammu and Kashmir in last ten years. While militancy has remained one reason that the people deserted the villages to settle down in urban secure zones but lack of resources in the rural areas has remained a major reason for this trend. In a public meeting in a rural area of Poonch district, the Chief Minister today said that the rural areas did not receive adequate attention with the result that people in these areas remained developmentally deficient. He said ever since the coalition government assumed office in J&K, the situation was changed for the better. He said during the last two years since he was at the helm of affairs remote, far off and neglected areas have for the first time received focused attention in matters of development. The Chief Minister said that the government had launched a comprehensive programme for development of villages in a phased manner. He said basic amenities like road connectivity, healthcare, education, drinking water and power were being provided in villages across the State so that people were benefited by development measures taken by the government for them. He said education facilities were extended to the doorsteps of people so that children of villages did not have to travel long distance to schools and colleges. He said in the coming years the focus of the government would be on consolidation of facilities in the expanded schools and healthcare institutions and creation of employment opportunities. The Chief Minister said the rural areas were agriculturally fertile with tremendous scope for development of horticulture. He asked people to take full benefit of the schemes launched by the government for promotion of horticulture.
