Rajouri|Sept 14
At least eleven girl students from Rajouri and Poonch twin border districts studying in Jammu University and other allied colleges have returned to their homes alleging harassment in the hands of various intelligence agencies since Nahida Altaf a law student was arrested by the police along with some explosive ammunition at Jammu.
Nahida Altaf (22) from Surankote town in border district Poonch was arrested by SOG of Jammu police last week in Tanda area when she was on way to Jammu from Surankote. She was arrested from a private car and police claimed to have recovered some explosive material from her possession which she had to deliver at some militant contacts at Jammu.
After her arrest, sources said police and other intelligence agencies have been investigating the credentials of all the Muslim girl students from Rajouri and Poonch.
In this connection, sources said, Jammu police has collected the details of all the Muslim boys and girls from Rajouri and Poonch districts studying in Jammu University and other allied colleges. The Jammu police has also written to the police head quarters of Rajouri and Poonch to give them the detailed character reports of the girl students of their regions studying in Jammu.
Giving details of the harassment by different security agencies since the arrest of Nahida Altaf, Saima Rasool (name changed) a botany student of Jammu University said that three times she was questioned by some unknown persons in the university premises. She says it was a coincidence that Nahida and she belonged to same district but she never knew her activities. “Not only me alone, my three friends two of them belonging to Mendhar have also been quizzed many times by the security agencies. With this harassment, we six girls of Poonch district have returned and we will go back to Jammu only if government gives us assurance that we will not be harassed in the name of militancy”, said Saima.
This is not the story of Saima and her friends alone, another group of five girls of district Rajouri have also reached their homes today saying that they were being harassed by intelligence and other security agencies in the name of militancy. One of the girls wishing not to be named said that not only the security agencies even the classmates were looking at them suspiciously. “We have been summoned in our respective departments four times during last one week and were quizzed by some unknown persons. Even some of them posed objectionable remarks on us”, she said adding that now they have decided not to go back till government assures us security and dignity.
When contacted a senior police officer admitted that an exercise has been started to maintain the record of all the students from militancy infested areas studying in Jammu. “This is not only for girls but we are also maintaining the records of the boys of Rajouri and Poonch. But it has been taken in mind that no one is harassed unnecessarily,” said a police officer wishing not to be named. He further said that the scanning of girls has been started since a girl student from Poonch district emerged as big militant courier in Jammu.
