| BJP sees ‘key role’ in govt formation after 2008 polls | | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | Sep14 While unfolding the contours of its future plan senior BJP leader and in charge Jammu and Kashmir, Shanta Kumar said on Friday, “We hope to have balance of power in our hands in the state after the 2008 elections.” Addressing a two day training programme for party workers Shanta Kumar said that the BJP will be in a position to play a key role in the formation of the government in Jammu and Kashmir after 2008 polls even if we are not able to win absolute majority. “Whether we join the govt or stay out of it we shall hold the strings of the government”, he added. In reply to a question whether the BJP will join hands with any of the regional parties including PDP and National conference if they fall short of absolute majority, he told reporters it will depend on the situation that existed in the state at that time. When asked that since the BJP led NDA government has alliance with National Conference at the national level, would that experiment be repeated in Jammu and Kashmir, Shanta Kumar said it will also depend on the situation at the time of the announcement of poll results. Earlier addressing party workers , Kumar exhorted them to raise people centric and development issues to gain foothold among masses and win their hearts. He also criticized the Cong led UPA govt for hurting religious sentiments of members of the majority community by filing a affidavit in the Supreme Court in the Ram Setu case. Former National Vice President and senior party leader Pyare Lal Khandelwal and state unit chief Ashok Khajuria in their addresses stressed upon the importance of addressing local issues linked with the masses in order to win their support ahead of 2008 polls.Khadelwal in his lengthy speech also told party workers to gear up for the election campaign and told them to handpick local issues.he said the BJP workers in Jammu and Ladakh region should consolidate their position to win more seats. "There is a division of votes in the Kashmir valley and if we focus on two other regions and plan our campaign appropriately I donot think why we should not win large number of seats to dictate terms to the next government in office". Former union Minister Prof Chaman Lal Gupta, former state chief Dr Nirmal Singh were also present on the occasion and interacted with party workers on the occasion.
