Jammu|Sep 14: While a demand of bilateral ceasefire during the holy month of fasting vanished without any ear to hear, the Ramadan today began at a violent note with four militants being killed.
The militants were killed in southern Kishtiwar district around early this morning, a police spokesman said. "The four were members of Lashkar-e-Toiba," he said, referring to a hardline Muslim militant group blamed by authorities for deadly attacks in Kashmir. Police said troops and militants were engaged in fighting at two other places in Kashmir.
Police also recovered four hand grenades from beneath a pile of bricks in Srinagar close to a shrine expected to be visited by thousands of Muslims later in the day.
In the past Ramadan in Kashmir has been marked by increased violence as Muslim militants believe those who die fighting during the holy month gain more heavenly rewards.

This year no rebel group has threatened to intensify attacks during Ramadan. With devotees packing out mosques, clerics have vowed to preach peace during the month.
Meanwhile in separate incident, the Police have arrested three suspected Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) militants during a security operation in Doda District's Cheera village.
Manohar Singh, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Doda District, said the three were being questioned about their modus operandi to recruit fresh LeT cadres.
The arrested were school going students in Jammu's Tanta Village. They aid a person had threatened them with dire consequences if they didn't join the militant outfit.
Gulshan, one of the arrested militants, said fear had forced them to join the Lashkar.
