| Let holy Ramzan month creates better sense | | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | Sep 14 The Muslim holy month of Ramzan begins from today and we extend warmest greetings to our Muslim brethren, with the hope and prayers that it brings peace and love for humanity in the minds of all. We identify ourselves with the grouse of Muslims in Jammu that unlike in Kashmir valley, where interruption free electric power is ensured to be available to the people for the whole of month, no such announcement with regard to Jammu region has been made and if the first day of Ramzan falling on Friday is any indication the routine of power curtailment will be as usual. We hope that at least in the early hours of morning when sehri is held and in the evening at the time of iftar power curtailment will not be effected.
The failure of the authorities to regulate the prices of essentials, particularly during the month of Ramzan, mainly those items which form part of the routine diet of Muslims during the month, is a matter of concern for all. The chicken and mutton prices have particularly shot up though only marginally, with the authorities concerned sleeping over the matter.
The Hippocrates among the business community and politicians invariably avail of the month to display extravaganza in throwing iftar parties, inviting ruling politicians and high officers, with a view to further their business or political prospects. Through this exercise they also demonstrate their secular credentials. But the fact remains that the common people among all the communities are more secular in their day to day life and conduct than these pseudo secularists. The right course for those, particularly the non Muslims who throw iftar parties, would be to invite the poor and deprived class people from the Muslim community to observe their iftar, by serving them the delicacies, which they cannot afford. In this way they will be doing more service to God and the fellow human beings.
Coming to the non observance of ceasefire during the Ramzan, about which some politicians have been half heartedly pleading, without any serious effort on their part to convince the militants as well as the central government to repeat the exercise taken for the first time in 2001 when the NDA government in the centre had announced unilateral ceasefire during Ramzan, which was later extended for sometime more, till the militants struck in a big way, forcing the government to lift restrain on the security forces to act to forestall the attacks by the terrorists. The ceasefire between the unscrupulous militants, having no regard to their commitments and the security forces only during the holy month of Ramzan has hardly any utility, unless this leads to ultimate right thinking in the minds of marauders and out and out criminals, under the guise of religious jehadis. As far the pains expressed by the NC patron Dr. Farooq Abdullah over the government of India not announcing unilateral ceasefire during the month of Ramzan, it may be recalled that as Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir in 2001 Farooq Abdullah had not appreciated the unilateral ceasefire announce by the then Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. He always favoured and advocated stern action against the militants, including their hot chase across the border in Pakistan and PoK and to bomb their training and launching pads in that country. His u turn is in keeping with the proverbial characteristic of Kashmiri politicians of being staunch Indian nationalists when in power, but supporters and sympathizers of the secessionists and separatists when out of power.
Notwithstanding ceasefire between the terrorists and the security forces having formally not come into force during this Ramzan month, we pray and hope that the better sense prevails among the terrorists who claime to be launching Islamic jehad, to exercise utmost restrain and eschew violence during this holy month of praying and fasting. The best service to God is to serve his creatures and ones fellow beings. Fasting and praying to please God cannot go with indulging in wanton killings of God's creatures and destroy His creation. The security forces to will be well advised to avoid crack downs as well as use the utmost restrain taking all the precaution that in their retaliatory action and their action to nab the terrorists, no innocent civilian becomes victim in the cross fire.
